We’re so excited to be bringing the very first Yarn Festival to Aberdeen on Sunday 13 May 2018! Whether you’re an experienced crafter, or just interested to see what goes on at a Yarn Festival, you’re sure to find something new at Aberdeen Yarnfest. It should be a great day out!
In our Demonstration area you will see the Grampian Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers showing their skills and wares; Jist Jute will show the creative and decorative items that can be done with a more unusual natural fibre and giving a little history lesson of the importance of the industry to the East of Scotland and we’ll be learning more about the different kinds of fleeces and what sort of wool they produce, and looking closely at the Bowmont breed.
Interested to know more about the difference between different kinds of fleece and fibre? See how the wool is processed and how different fleeces turn out as fibre and yarn.
You can stroll through our market place and savour a feast for the eyes of all that is wonderful about wool, yarn and fibre from the best local and national purveyors of the fibre arts! Whether you’re looking for some nice yarn to knit your son or grandson a sweater, or something uniquely dyed or spun to craft a beautiful shawl, there is something for you. If felting or spinning is more your thing, then luscious fleece and fibre will be on your list of must-sees. As well as a magical selection of materials, you will find on sale the finest hand crafted equipment, accessories and finished articles – beautiful felted items, small items of furniture, jewellery, clothing, accessories – you’ll be amazed at the wide variety of articles on offer, which will hopefully further inspire your own creativity.
Our Workshop programme is now available and tickets are on sale, but going fast! There are classes for novice and more experienced knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners, with established tutors, and we are delighted to welcome them to Aberdeen Yarnfest.
We are also proud to be supporting Octopus for a Preemie UK at this event, who do such sterling work with premature babies and their families. The local coordinator will be on hand to tell you more about the charity and how you can help support them by making “Octopals” and other items, and also accepting donations of finished octopals, crochet hooks, knitting needles, 100% cotton yarn and of course, monetary donations are always welcome.
Visitors to Aberdeen Yarnfest are invited to bring along your current woolly work-in-progress, as there will be ample opportunity for a sit down and a chat with fellow enthusiasts in our “Clik and Claik” zones to compare notes, share purchases and even to enjoy soup and a sandwich or a cup of tea and a cake, provided by Fly Cup Catering, who do such commendable work in not only in making the finest food and drink, but in providing a supportive work and training environment to adults with learning difficulties. We are so proud to have their participation at Aberdeen Yarnfest.
If you prefer more of a formal lunch, or a cheeky wee cocktail on your day out, the facilities of the Doubletree Aberdeen Treetops hotel will be at your disposal. The hotel also provides free onsite parking, an ATM machine, as well as ample toilets and cloakroom facilities.
Before you leave, please stop by our Video Booth, and leave us a short message on your impressions of the event, and show us what you bought or made during your visit! We’ll use this information to make Aberdeen Yarnfest even bigger and better in 2019.
We look forward to welcoming you on Sunday 13 May, 2018 to the Doubletree Aberdeen Treetops Hotel for a fun, friendly, fibre fiesta! See you there!
